Information

  • Luis Aníbal Calderón epitomizes excellence among the producers collaborating with Cofinet. Hailing from a lineage deeply rooted in coffee farming, Luis has dedicated over four decades to honing his craft. However, his journey has been far from smooth sailing.

In 2011, Luis faced the daunting prospect of losing his farm to the bank. Reliant on the volatile C-market for his coffee sales, he struggled to break even, let alone repay the loan he had procured to expand his farm. Faced with this precarious situation, Luis turned to his local Specialty Coffee Association. While their offer of paying 15% above the C-price was not a substantial reward for the extra effort required to produce specialty-grade coffee, it provided a lifeline for Luis, spurring him to delve deeper into this niche sector. In a bold move in 2012, he planted 5,000 Gesha trees, embarking on a patient three-year wait for them to bear fruit. This endeavor proved transformative for Luis.

In 2015, driven by his newfound passion, Luis made the pivotal decision to transition his entire farm to exotic coffee varieties. Today, his farm, Finca Villa Betulia, stands as a shining example of specialty coffee production in Acevedo, Huila. Boasting an impressive array of exotic varieties, including Red Gesha, Tabi, Red Bourbon, and many more, Luis has curated a diverse and vibrant coffee ecosystem.

With the support of Cofinet, Luis has continually refined his processing methods, particularly for high-end micro-lots. A master in techniques such as Extended Fermentation, Honeys, and Naturals, Luis has elevated his craft to new heights, cementing his status as a pioneer in the world of specialty coffee.
